It’s official. You’re engaged!!
Now, where do you start?
Wether you were totally expecting it, or completely surprised, the wedding planning to do lists are going to hit you hard! They say that once you’ve secured your VENUE, PHOTOGRAPHER and DRESS, everything else falls into place. Here are a few tips and tricks for you to make “finding your dress” easy breezy!
When To Start Shopping
There are two very important things to keep in mind when shopping for your dream dress.
Order Time and Alterations Time.
Depending on the designer, order times average around 4-6 months just for your dress to be made! Depending on where your designer is from - Australia and Spain are the locations of some of our designers - it can take up to 3 weeks for shipping.
Every bride will need some sort of Alterations. Making sure it’s your perfect length, bustling the train, and tightening around the bust and or hips are the most common. You typically have 3 appointments with your seamstress to make sure your dress is as perfect as you are! You should start these no later than 6 weeks before your wedding.
It’s safe to say you should start shopping for your dream dress 1 year before your wedding. 6 months at the latest.
Tip: Not every bride says yes to the first dress. So be sure to give yourself plenty of time to do all the shopping you feel you want!
Trick: Once you know your gowns estimated delivery date call your seamstress and schedule your appointment a few weeks out.
Who To Bring
When you schedule your appointments at the Bridal Shops you love, be sure to know who and how many people you want to experience this moment with you! Most Bridal Shops are going to have a max on how many party members of yours they can accommodate - Our store can accommodate up to 5 - depending on how big the store and appointment rooms are.
But thats no biggy! You will only want your most special, trustworthy and loving people to come with you anyway! We all have those friends and family members that we care about what they think. But keep in mind that this is YOUR wedding and you need to wear what YOU love and feel the most YOU in! with that said, bring the people that will support you, make you feel good and celebrate you no matter what you put on or love.
Tip: On your wedding day, everyone is going to LOVE the dress you said yes to. No one is going to say “Man, I’m sure she tried on a better dress than this one.” They will see you as the beautiful bride because you stuck to who you are.
Trick: Want your whole family’s opinion on the dress? Come in with your #1 first, find a top 3 and just show everyone those 3. That way no one, especially you, stresses out!
What To Wear Under The Dress
Comfort is Key. You most likely will be wearing this one dress for an entire day/night. You want to make sure you are as comfortable as possible and can dance the night away! That all starts with how the dress feels when you first put it on.
Most dresses will already have padding built in. If not, you can have that added in alterations. That way you wont need to wear a bra. Who wants to anyway?! So when you come try them on, don’t be afraid to toss your bra on the chair and forget about it for a few! Depending on what you’re looking for, you might find that dresses have low cut, completely open or illusion backs, making a bra visible anyway.
As you get ready to try on the gowns you’ve picked, your stylist will give you the option for them to help you from start to finish in the dressing room, or just help when you need zipping. That way you can lose your bra in privacy!
For anyone that just wants to feel more secure and visually comfortable, spanks and shapers are always a good idea!
Tip: You don’t need to worry about shoes just yet. Most Bridal Shops will have a pedestal for you to step up on so you can see the full length of the dress. You will need the shoes for alterations when you get your dress hemmed.
Trick: It is very easy to take a dress in, if you end up losing weight. So never feel like you can’t try on dresses because you aren’t the weight you want to be at. Come as you are! Everyone is beautiful and we want to celebrate you as a Bride!
How Do I Know What To Try On
Before you come to your appointment, do some shopping online! Figure out what Designers the Bridal Shop carries and browse those designers. Grab inspo from Instagram and Pintrest and create a mood board of your wedding. This not only help yourself get an idea of what you are wanting, but it helps your stylist!
Don’t be afraid to totally depend on your stylist. That’s what they’re there for! They know whats in their store so they are going to be the perfect cheat sheet for you! Tell them what you want and want to try, and they will pull all the best options. They will be the ones that really listen to what you like and don’t like about certain gowns, and will be able to pull the even better ones.
One of the main things you want to do when you go shopping is keep an open mind. Even though you may know exactly what you want, there might be a dress that completely changes everything!
Tip: Start with 3-5 dresses that you’ve had your eye on, or that really speak to you. Once you see what you like and don’t like about those, your stylist will be able to determine what dresses to put you in next, that will get you closer and closer to your dream dress!
Trick: The fewer, the better. Only grab dresses that you can really see yourself getting married in. The dresses that are “Just for fun” are only going to confuse you and waste your time.
When To Say YES
Every bride is different. Not everyone cries when they know it’s the one, not everyone knows it’s the one right away. It’s when you feel the love of your Fiance in the gown. It’s when you feel the most beautiful. It’s when you feel the emotion of walking down the aisle to the person of your dreams. It’s when you feel like a Bride!
Tip: Wether you want to wear a veil or not, trying one on can really pull the whole picture together!
Trick: If you want to sleep on the decision, make sure to get lots of pictures of the dress(s) that you’re thinking about. That way you can look back and remember everything you loved!
